The descriptions, and the detailed line drawings, have been taken from a twelve page descriptive catalogue, ("THE DAVID WRAY COLLECTION OF MEASURED DRAWINGS"), that was issued about 1978. The catalogue has been long out of print and is no longer available, but the detailed and accurate drawing are still available from a few sources.

Each drawing is a portrait of an individual vehicle in working condition. Any missing parts are noted on the drawings and are either reconstructed from other local information, or, if this is inconclusive, omitted altogether. There is no 'simplification' or guesswork. Drawings are to a constant scale of 1½ inches = 1 foot, (1/8 th Actual size). For convenience, drawings are on single sheets.

Spindle sides, long boarded, wood axles and hoop tyres.

Norfolk Waggon

Panel sides, cross boarded, wood axles and hoop tyres.

Suffolk Waggon

Panel sides, cross boarded, wood axles and hoop tyres.

Northamptonshire Waggon

Spindle sides, long boarded, iron axles, hoop tyres, and double breasted.

Derbyshire Waggon

Spindle sides, cross boarded, iron axles and hoop tyres.

Warwickshire Waggon

Panel sides, cross boarded, iron axles and hoop tyres. Side shelving carried across front board. Built 1912.

  HOOP RAVED WAGGONS

Buckinghamshire Waggon

(The 'Oxford' Waggon) spindle sides, longboarded, iron axles and hoop tyres.

 

West Gloucestershire Waggon

Panel sides, cross boarded, iron axles, hoop and strake tyres.

South Cornwall Waggon

Very shalow spindle sides, crossboarded, iron axles and hoop tyres. Fully locking. Post 1900.

Somerset Waggon

(The 'Cock Raved' Waggon) spindle sides with strouters and elaborate chamfering. Longboarded, iron axles and hoop tyres.

FARM CARTS (Two Wheels)

Kent Dung Cart

Tipping Dung Cart. Typical Dung Cart build, iron axles and hoop tyres.

Derbyshire Scotch Cart

A tipping Cart of later 'Scotch' build. Planksides, iron axles and hoop tyres. Post 1900.

Lincolnshire Hermaphrodite

Tipping Raved cart with spindle sides. Long boarded. Wood axles and hoop tyres with detachable fore carriage for converting to a 4 wheeled waggon. Built 1853.

Lincolnshire Potato Cart

A Raved cart - Long boarded, iron axles and hoop tyres. An elaborate and interesting vehicle.

Suffolk Long Cart

A non-tipping 'long cart' used for harvesting. A simple and unusual example, a close relative of carts used in medieval times.

Hertfordshire Dung Cart

A large tipping dung cart fitted with ladder and copse for use in the harvest field. Very typical of the county. Iron axles and hoop tyres.

Hertfordshire Longshaft Timber Bob

Longshaft timber bob with pivoted arm for lifting logs. Hoop tyres. Very large wheels.

Large Sussex Timber Bob

Large timber bob having deep arched axel. Hoop tyres. Fitted with brakes.

Kent Bean Brake

A horse hoe for inter-row cultivation.

Gloucester Long Plough

Very similar in form to the medieval swing plough.

Kent Hop Shim

A Four-Horse Hop Shim. A wooden framed cultivator having two small barrow type wheels on one axle.

Kent Turn-Wrest Plough

A wheeled 'one way' plough.

Kent/Sussex Plough

A 'one way' swing plough.

"BARRON" TREE TRANSPLANTER

"Barron" Tree Transplanter

A little known vehicle, for lifting and transplanting live trees up to 40' or 50' high. The original is still at Kew Gardens and is believed to be the last survivor. The transplanter would be taken to the prepared sight where the tree was to be lifted, dismantled, then assembled over the trench and around the tree. The tree now being in the centre of the frame formed by the fore and rear carriages. Once everything was secure the tree would be winched out of the trench, and transported to the planting site. The tree would be lowered into the new site, and the transplanter was again dismantled, the rootball unwrapped and the pit backfilled with humus rich soil - to encourage new fibrous root growth. This would make a very dramatic model if it could be shown around a 1/8 th scale 40' tree, (the "tree" would be 5' high), it would require quite a lot of room, perhaps displayed in a museum.
